Briar Hill Designs was born out of a synergic friendship between two self-proclaimed fabric lovers and sisters-in-law, Caverly Smith and Julia Wentzell. Briar Hill derives from a whimsical place, a paradise of the past, inspired by the yellow-brick hilltop cottage where Caverly’s maternal grandmother lived all her life. There, amidst the hilltop, lie lush gardens and climbing vines cascading over white picket fences under warm rays of dancing sunshine; a perfect place for afternoon tea. The collections, patterns and artwork from Briar Hill Designs are nostalgic, intended to visually transport you to a simpler time before the breach of etiquette when unspoiled natural beauty was abundant.

Caverly Smith brings her fine art background to the team having earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration from Sheridan College in Ontario, Canada. Her specialty includes oil painting with palette knife techniques, watercolor, line-and-wash, and storybook style illustration, which she considers her favorite medium. Julia Wentzell is a lifelong sewing enthusiast with over 25 years of experience. Julia earned her diploma in Costume Studies from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where she honed her skills in pattern making, fashion apparel, tailoring and 18th century apparel construction. After trying her hand at quilt making, Julia was hooked, and was soon sewing quilts of her own design and style, creating a fresh take on traditional patchwork. Don’t miss the exciting array of patterns Briar Hill Designs has in store.
